  14. The P-Kit is the first persistence library providing a complete,
  15. powerful and simple interface between Object-Oriented Languages and
  16. Object-Oriented Database Management Systems. The P-Kit provides a
  17. unique tool to aid the developer in designing persistent mission
  18. critical custom applications.

  20. Because the P-Kit removes virtually all programming overhead in storing
  21. and retrieving objects, persistent mission-critical applications are
  22. developed rapidly, all the time allowing for accurate modelling.

  24. The P-Kit addresses the following issues:

  26. Transparency:

  28.   Unlike using other database interfaces, there is no requirement to
  29.   generate and maintain specialized persistent versions of classes.
  30.   Persistence can be added to third-party libraries and existing programs
  31.   with minimal adjustments for fine-grained control.

  35.   By encapsulating the persistent storage medium, developers working with
  36.   Objective-C or Eiffel, and the P-Kit are freed from implementing
  37.   low-level persistence related solutions and do not need to address
  38.   different database interface languages. By using the P-Kit, persistence
  39.   programming becomes uniform across heterogeneous databases.

  43.   Users of the P-Kit can easily extend or re-write actions such as those
  44.   for storing and retrieving objects.

  48.   The P-Kit provides a powerful mechanism through Anonymous Objects,
  49.   allowing manipulation of database objects without the need to have their
  50.   class defined in your application.

  58. The idea of the P-Kit arose out of software design meetings between
  59. Hutchison Avenue Software and WSC Investment Services. Paul Murphy,
  60. WSC's Director of Advanced Technology was part of the planning and
  61. design for the original Eiffel P-Kit:

  63. "When we first started looking at our systems' requirements, we realized
  64. we were going to need the performance and characteristics of an object
  65. database. We also realized that tying ourselves to a single vendor was
  66. foolish given the state of the market. We needed high-performance,
  67. flexibility, and isolation from the database's API. All in all, a tall
  68. order. We approached Hutchison because of their expertise in this area.

  70. technical staff. The current version of the kit surpasses our original
  71. expectations," says Murphy.

  73. The P-Kit currently supports O2 Technology's O2 database. A Flat-File
  74. adaptor is also available allowing the P-Kit to make objects persistent
  75. without using a database. Adaptors for other databases are currently in
  76. the works.
